BACKGROUND

In most cities and urban developments, children's playgrounds and playsets require regeneration and upgrading after 8-10 years. Playground equipment, like any machinery, may have many moving parts and they need maintenance. Owners may also see the need to bring in new playsets due to changing user demands. Sometimes some parts of these playsets can start to deteriorate such that it makes more sense to consider a complete replacement after owners run a cost-benefit analysis.

Some of these used sets maybe recycled for parts, while others may be donated to marginalised communities for a second life with the happy children who would simply use them to their maximum lifespan. However, these playsets (sometimes even smaller ones) are frequently hoarded and overwhelmed by dozens or even hundreds of children from different villages, speeding up all aspects of wear and tear, including rough use and possible vandalism.

Playgrounds located in villages and remote places become an issue where they do not have easy access to replacement parts. This deterioration will ultimately result in safety issues and product failure of the playground equipment potentially leading to injury from lack of maintenance.

GLOBAL CALL

For the first time, IFLA Asia Pacific Region, together with IFLA Americas Region jointly partner KOMPAN to run an international design challenge to design innovative and functional playgrounds that would require minimum or zero maintenance.

The vision of this competition is to innovate, prototype and produce the newly designed playsets suitable for marginalised communities under harsh conditions as the ultimate challenge.

The competition calls for design students, landscape architects and product designers to design and detail functional playgrounds that require minimum to zero maintenance and enter them for review by a panel of judges.

COMPETITION OUTLINE

Participants will design an accessible landscape space that will include an inclusive playground for the whole family.

The playground should meet the purpose of supporting child development by significantly improving opportunities for health, learning and social inclusion, in a fun and voluntary way.

There is substantial documentation about the physical health benefits of play to children, teenagers and even to adults and senior citizens. A playground should integrate the motivators that make kids and adults want to move and meet through play. It must train in a voluntary and fun way- motor, sensory, social, emotional and creative skills in all children. The playground should become a playful framework for social inclusion and interaction. Different play activities could include:

BALANCE - To balance is to stay upright when walking or standing on a surface that makes this challenging (e.g. a wobbly, inclined, or narrow surface).
BOUNCE - To bounce is the act of bouncing on a responsive, flexible, elastic or tensile surface.
CLIMB- To climb is the act of moving upwards, cross-coordinating arms and legs, on a vertical or inclined surface or net.
CONSTRUCT - To construct is the act of creating new patterns, shifting items or materials to new positions or constructing with materials that can be transformed or manipulated.
CRAWL - To crawl is the movement of moving forwards or backwards, cross-coordinating arms and legs, on a horizontal or slightly inclined surface.
DRAMATIC PLAY - Dramatic play is motivated through play items that stage a frame, place or environment for acting out make believe or role play scenarios.
GLIDE - To glide is the act of moving from one point to another without shifting the feet, in a horizontal or vertical movement, in a seated, lying or standing position, letting gravity do the work.
HANG IN ARMS - To hang in arms is the act of carrying the body with the hands or arms, possibly to traverse to another platform or play item.
JUMP - To jump is the act of jumping up or down on a hard surface.
PULL - To pull is the act of pulling an item towards you or you towards an item with one or both hands, or possibly using the entire body.
PUSH - To push is the act of pushing an item away from you with one or both hands, possibly with the entire body.
ROCK- To rock is the action of rocking back and forth, or sideways, on e.g. a piece of spring equipment.
ROTATE - To rotate involves a vertical or horizontal slower paced turn of the body, facilitated by a piece of equipment.
RULES PLAY - Rules play is motivated through play items that suggest games-with-rules, cooperation and team work, e.g. tic-tac-toe, timers or ball games.
SENSORY- To sense is the act of taking in information with the sensory system: seeing, feeling, hearing or sensing with the body.
SLIDE - To slide is the act of moving fast downwards seated on a slide.
SOCIALIZE - To socialize is the act of meeting, communicating or cooperating in an activity that stimulates and facilitates social interaction.
SPIN - To spin involves a fast, repeated horizontal or vertical turn of the body on a piece of equipment that facilitates the movement.
SWAY - To sway is the movement of swaying back and forth, or around, lying, seated or possibly standing, in a pendulant or circular movement, e.g. on a hammock or on a rope.
SWING - To swing is the movement of swinging back and forth, or in circular movement, seated, standing or lying, in an unhindered arc.
WONDER - To wonder is motivated through play items that make children need and use their logical, abstract or creative thinking skills, as well as their memory.

PHYSICAL Joy of movement:Motor skills, muscle, cardio and bone density.
SOCIAL-EMOTIONAL - Joy of being together:Teamwork, tolerance and sense of belonging
COGNITIVE - Joy of learning:Curiosity, understanding of causal relations and knowledge of the world
CREATIVE - Joy of creating:Co-creation and experimenting with materials

JUDGING CRITERIA
All final playground designs will be assessed based on the following requirements:

At least 10 years of durability
Cost-effectiveness
Identifiable play principles
Compliance with ASTM 1487 playground safety standard
Able to withstand rough use and harsh conditions
Mobility and transportability in one 20 foot shipping container

SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Deliverables Stage 1: “Incubation Stage”

Maximum 4 pages in A3, landscape orientation. Submitted only in PDF or JPEG format with min 300dpi resolution. (Optional: Video presentation with a maximum duration of 3 minutes.) Including but not limited to:

1 poster: Overall concept description

Play activity/activities
Play value, child development benefits and age appropriateness
Concept feasibility in accordance to design competition description

1 poster: Idea development (optional)

Sketches showing the ideation process, development steps, tests, models

1-2 posters: Final proposal of chosen design concept

Descriptions and illustrations explaining the play equipment concept feasibility

Play value(s) in accordance with design competition description
Emphasis on innovative aspects and solutions

Descriptions and illustrations explaining the technical and aesthetic aspects of your design

3D and projection drawings
Detailed drawing
Choice of materials
Consideration on resilience and durability
Overall dimensions on the play equipment

Deliverables Stage 2: “Final Design Development Stage”

Maximum 3 pages in A2, landscape orientation. Submitted only in PDF or JPEG format with min 300dpi resolution. (Optional: Video presentation with a maximum duration of 3 minutes.) Including but not limited to:

1 poster: Detailed play concept description in text and illustrations

Explaining play value and child development benefits (focusing on changes since stage 1)
Explaining how the design is suitable for marginalized communities under harsh conditions
Illustrating valueadded qualities

1-2 posters: detailed esthetical, technical and constructional aspects

3D and projection drawings
Material suitability
Integrity and durability
Installation considerations
Initial safety evaluation in accordance with standards (EN, ASTM)

Stage 1 & 2 Standard Requirements

One submission is a maximum 4 pages in A3, landscape orientation. Total file size not more than 5mb in PDF or JPEG format with min 300dpi resolution. There is no limit to the number of submissions you can make.
Please clearly indicate the Play Activity (E.g. Climbing, Swinging, etc. Please refer to the 21 play activities listed above) you have designed for.
Please indicate participant name in the submission and on every page. Participant names in the submission MUST be the same as the registered name in YLAA.
Any file that fails to open and/or is not readable by the jury panel will be forfeited.
Applicant is responsible for clear communication of ideas and legibility of their work.
Any direct use of third parties’ ideas, images, copyrighted images or photographs will immediately disqualify the entry.

2nd stage results will be announced in 3rd Quarter 2020 at a suitable event (possibly at IFLA Americas/Asia Pacific regional event). Date and venue to be determined.

ELIGIBILITY

The competition is open to Landscape Architects, design professionals and students in the field of landscape architecture, architecture, engineering and product/ industrial design.

This competition is ONLY ELIGIBLE for applicants under the age of 35.

All applicants MUST FIRST register themselves under the Young Landscape Architects Alliance (YLAA) network.

Entries will not be accepted if:

The participant is not registered under YLAA.
The names registered in YLAA does not tally with the submission.
The participant does not meet the admission requirements.
The required documentation or application is not complete.
The entry is not received by the deadline.
